The second-brightest star in the constellation Canis Major. It is a giant B star of magnitude 2.0 and the prototype of the class of the slightly variable Beta Canis Majoris stars. It changes in brightness by a few hundredths of a magnitude every six hours. This low level of variability cannot be detected by the naked eye alone. See also: Table 3. |
